Teeter Totter

Well, I know it's taken forever to get this area updated, but I finally took a minute to write down what we have done to my wife's Jeep.

The 360 inch AMC motor was punched out .030 and a new set of pistons and rings were installed on the polished crank with resized rods. I installed a comp cams 260H grind cam to get the up's and down's going in the new valve train. This cam may be a little to hot for this application but I'm still playing with it. An Edelbrock intake and 600CFM carb top the motor and work extremely well. If you didn't know with a few mods the Carter/Edelbrock carbs can be one step below fuel injection with a few mods, ( ours has to be shut off after falling over ). The last thing to do was to get spark to the cylinders, a MSD system was chosen including a billet distributor, MSD-6 off-road box and high vibration coil. That about does it for the motor although there is a story about how I blew it up in the garage when we fired it (it wasn't my fault), and we started all over again.

The TF727 was simply built with a shift kit, and a LARGE Earl's cooler. We did try a 900 RPM converter but pulled it out in favor of a 1500 RPM unit. When we first got this thing running there was a bad flat spot at about 900-1000 RPM and being pretty sure the carb was right we attributed the flat area to the converter, after swapping converters the flat spot was better but not gone. Since then I discovered a problem in the accelerator pump, no flat spot and excellent throttle response. I'm going to reinstall the low stall converter again an play with it this winter, we will keep you posted.

ARB's and 4.10 gears were installed in the stock Dana 30 and AMC 20 axles, yes I know it will never live, I must live right, after two trips to Moab ( Rusty Nail, Pritchett, the Spike and Lower Helldorado ) and seven trips through the Penrose/Independence Trails, I have yet to break a part. I did bend a stock tie rod, but have upgraded to a D.O.M. tie rod and drag link with rod ends. This was all done with stock two-piece rear axles except for Easter Jeep Safari 2001, I put Superior 1 piece axles in prior to leaving. There was zero twist in the stock axles when we removed them!

We installed 35's, built new front and rear bumpers, built a cage and a fuel tank, threw on a set of sliders in front of the rear spring hangers and went wheeling. Sure there is a lot more to do, but it is amazing what we have done with the Jeep with a minimum of mods, we need to build a real cross member, install a new tub, ( rust ), and just some general clean up of wiring and such. All and all we're happy with it, sure it isn't the baddest Jeep on the block, but it has been driven to Moab at 75-80 miles an hour wheeled all week and driven back isn't that what there supposed to do?
